Market Wizards: Interviews With Top Traders (updated)
This is an amazing book and taught me many valuable things about the market, but it is also a tough read at times. It probably took me around 4 months to finish this from start to finish. This book takes you through interviews with successful hedge fund managers and gives you insights on their investment strategy. Interviews with people such as Jamie Mai and Edward Thorp (a brilliant professor/investor/gambler who created the first winning blackjack strategy) were interesting reads that you fly through, but others, not so much. Still, if you are looking for a book to give you tips on markets and value investing, this is a good read. It is truly a privilege to get to know these traders.
Compared to previous books, and with the 2008 financial crisis in fresh memory, more effort goes into discussing risk management than before. Follow up questions and examples give further granularity and most of those interviewed – save one or two systematic traders – share graciously. All through the book there are insertions explaining the more exotic derivatives, various market events and other topics that enable the reader to follow the conversations. Now, there’s a comprehensive, objective, and reliable tutorial and reference for the entire field of technical analysis. For traders, researchers, and serious investors alike, this is the definitive book on technical analysis.
Apart from that, there are inspirational stories which motivate the reader to become one a successful trader in the world. Mr. Schwager is one of the founders of Fund Seeder , a platform designed to find undiscovered trading talent worldwide and connect unknown successful traders with sources of investment capital. Mr. Schwager is a recognized industry expert in futures and hedge funds and the author of a number of widely acclaimed financial books. Similar to the previous Market Wizard books, it is interesting to hear about the paths of unknown wizards and their techniques. I was hoping to hear more stories around systematic trading, but most are discretionary traders who have techniques difficult to replicate. The traders he presents, both discretionary and systematic and both technical and fundamental (with a new category espoused by Chris Camillo to boot—using neither of the traditional models and relying on something new entirely). Hungarian by birth, Nicolas Darvas trained as an economist at the University of Budapest.
Schwager seems to be perfectly comfortable discussing almost any nuances in any investment style imaginable and where the previous books clearly featured interviews with Wizards, this one rather presents discussions between equals. The author asks about everything from personal background and motivation to process and strategy.
The author shares the tips which of successful trading which is adopted by the successful traders. It includes the story of turning the $ 30,000 into $ 80 million.
Reader Q&a
Bringing together the wisdom of the true masters of the markets, Hedge Fund Foreign exchange reserves is a collection of timeless insights into what it takes to trade in the hedge fund world. The third in the bestselling Market Wizards series, this time focusing on the barometer of the economy—the stock market.
All 15 traders have totally different ways of making money. This breadth means that there is something for everyone, but more than once you also find a nugget served by a person with totally different investment style from yourself.
The book covers 17 different traders who share their successes and failure’s encountered. Most started with very little capital and were able to build a successful trading mentality by developing a discipline that worked for them during certain market environments. Each trader has fundamental trading rules that are followed in a very strict sense. Most claim there losses are a result of not following there own rules. That said, the book is famous for a reason – Schwager seems to have gotten some very candid thoughts from some distinguished traders. I also did enjoy his own commentary at the beginning and end of each interview as it added additional color to the Q&A.
